Regional Supply/Demand Balance
Methodology: Scrap supply calculated using First River's proprietary rate of 0.2414 tons per capita annually. Steel mill scrap demand calculated using a 4-step process: (1) Production = Capacity × Utilization%, (2) Raw Material Needed = Production × 1.1, (3) After Home Scrap = Raw Material - (Production × Home Scrap%), (4) Purchased Scrap Demand = After Home Scrap × Scrap%. Each mill's utilization rate, home scrap rate, and purchased scrap percentage are individually tracked. International trade (2025 data): net imports increase regional supply, net exports decrease supply. Auto shredder locations (280 total) shown for reference; capacity data not included in supply calculations. Population data from U.S. Census Bureau 2024 estimates.
